Laurie Halse Anderson uses lips in the book Speak to portray emotions in the main character Melinda. Melinda is not a very happy girl. She never really show her true feelings other than sadness. When she does show sadness it's alone and no one can see what's actually going on. When Melinda begins to understand why talking is actually good she has to do a project but she has to present it orally. Instead of telling Mr. Neck how wrong it she tries a different tactic so she won't have to talk at all.“The suffragettes fought for the right to speak.They were attacked, arrested, and thrown in jail for daring to do what they wanted.Like they were, I am willing to stand up for what I believe in. No one should be forced to give speeches. I choose to stay silent” (Anderson 156). How is she going to give a report on a group of women fighting for their rights to speak and be equal if she stays silent? Melinda was doing the complete opposite and wanted to keep quiet even though she was supposed to do a presentation on a group of women who fought for their right to speak.
