I needed the wonderful internet of things to help me understand what I was missing from the story. A white elephant is apparently symbolic of a gift that often turns into a burden. I read through the story twice and personally found nothing awe inspiring. I couldn’t see the clues either time. I was hindered by the modern knowledge that women should not drink when pregnant. It seems not using alcohol during pregnancy should have been common knowledge back when this written considering America was in the middle of prohibition. I thought the man was describing a simple bar operation and posing the idea maybe they would run a bar. I tend to be very straight forward I like things spelled out without subtle clues or subliminal messages. Abortion
