When you think of the word and or name Rose, you first think of a flower and then second think of symbols such as, beautiful, pretty and love. Those symbols can tie into the character Rose Maxson in the play, Fences. Her name, similar to playwright, August Wilson's mother's name can represent the nurturing love, kindness and care that she displays in the play. Rose it the main character Troy’s wife and mother to Cory. In the play, she is a 43 year old African American housewife and mother. Like most housewives during this time period and even today, she volunteered at her neighborhood church, she would stay at home and do the chores that needed to be done and she showed her family a lot of love and care.
