The Symbolism Of Fences In Fence, By August Wilson

In August Wilson's play “ Fences” every character has their very own metaphorical connections to fit in with the theme of the play. The “ Fence” is just not being built and used for outside decor, but as a mentally metaphoric representation of each of the unique main characters in the play.
The main characters in Wilsons play were mainly Rose, Troy, Gabriel, Lysons, Bono, and Cory. Troy is considered the protagonist in the play. Troy is like the centerpiece of everyones “Fence”, such as everyone's “Fence” is created or begun dealing with Troy. Troy is husband to Rose, Father to Lyons, Cory, and Raynell, Brother to Gabriel, and bestfriend to Bono.
Cory, Troy's son and high school senior that is very interested in football is ready to graduate and leave away from home and be distance from his father. When Cory graduated he went off to join the marines. While Cory is serving with the marines he learns about the death of his father, after returning back home he refuses to attend his father's funeral service, because of the “fence” they had between each other.

He spent most of his life without his father Troy as he was incarcerated for murder. Since he doesn't have a steady flow of income, he depends on his girlfriend Bonnie, who works at the hospital to pay for bills and provide food. Lyons does not stay with parents,but frequently stops by and visit and often ask for a small loan from his father. (2.1).
Bono, Troy's best friend, was like a role model to Bono. Bono learned to not make the same mistakes as Troy as they spent time in prison together. Bono knew that Rose loved Troy with all her heart and that he should love her the same as well. Troy and Bono always go every Friday evening for a drink to socialize and talk about
