The Symbolism Of Eye Color In Greek Mythology

If there was anything in nature that there was not a myth to explain, the Greeks became curious, started to wonder and create new myths. Eye color was a common thing people wondered about. One day Zeus got bored of doing things he was supposed to be doing, so he decided to listen to conversations of humans. The conversation he overheard made him wonder.
“Eye color is very interesting, isn’t it,” said one man.
“Yes, it is,” said the other.
“How is it that if the mother has green eyes and the father has brown eyes, that their baby can have blue eyes,” asked the first man. Zeus became very worried that these men would try to discover the real reasons behind eye color. Zeus Thought and thought about how he could explain eye color to the humans without giving away the true genetics behind it.
“I will create a goddess of eyes” Zeus concluded, she will be named Calliope Zeus decided.
Thus, the very next morning Zeus gathered the best clay he could find to make her body. Zeus got all of the gods together to craft Calliope from the clay Zeus had gathered. Calliope becomes the goddess of eyes and decides what eye color every human and god will be born with. …show more content…
