Schubert was very ill in 1823 (suspected tertiary syphilis) and his career down the drain, after failing miserably in his opera Fierabras and with his publisher Diabelli who left him virtually un-paid. The poem most possibly being about the old legend in Europe where a sovereign demands to spend the night with a bride to be, threatening that her soon to be husband would die if she refused. The sovereign becomes the symbol of death and tells the woman “softly shall you sleep in my arms”. For Adele’s song we have the classic Verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus chorus form, but in Schubert’s song we have the AB form, with no chorus but only 2 verses. Sure we date back to what was common in both times, but Schubert’s was written to be a poem, and Adele’s was written to be a song. The fact that Adele intentionally wrote this piece of music with the thought of having instruments behind it, a melody to it etc. shows that it was completely differently written. Schubert only composed an accompaniment and melody for already written lyrics, showing that he is of course a brilliant composer and had an emotional connection with the lyrics, but he didn’t compose this song because he had inspirational words flowing around his head, unlike Adele who quote, heard them in the middle of the night in his head’.
