The word “symbolism” is derived from the word “symbol”, which refers to the use of symbols, or a set of related symbols (Baldick 2000: 219).
Symbolism can therefore be defined as the art of expressing ideas and emotions not by describing them directly, nor by defining them through overt comparisons with concrete images, but re-creating them in the mind of the reader through the use of unexplained symbols. (Chadwick 1971: 6)

The French writers reacted against the descriptive precision and objectivity of realism and the scientific determinism of naturalism. The style had its beginnings with the publication Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil 1857) by Charles Baudelaire. The works of Edgar Allan Poe, which Baudelaire admired greatly and translated into French, were a significant influence and the source of many stock tropes and images. Other symbolist writers included the poets Rimbaud and Laforgue, the novelists Joris-Karl Huysmans (A Rebours 1884) and Edouard Dufardin, the dramatists Maurice Maeterlinck and so on. Its influence on the other arts can be seen in the music of Debussy and the paintings of Odilon Redon, Gustave Moreau, Van Gogh and Gauguin (Murray 1999: 1086).The aesthetic was developed by Stéphane Mallarmé and Paul Verlaine during the 1860s and '70s.
