In the book, The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan, the main character Magnus and the Sword of Summer (or Sumarbrander, in Norse) had a relationship that changed through the storyline. In the beginning they didn’t know or trust each other, but later in the book they developed a strong bond of friendship. Magnus and the sword first met when Magnus pulled it up from the bottom of the Charles river to fight the fire giant king Surt. At first, Magnus and the sword were total strangers to each other. Magnus had no idea what the sword was capable of, and the sword knew nothing about Magnus, either. Later in the book, Magnus learned more about the importance of the sword and his duty of stopping the Ragnarok. To this point, Magnus still thought of the Sword of Summer as an object that he’s supposed to retrieve to save the world, instead of a living thing with consciousness. After Magnus got the sword back from Ran the sea goodness, he asked it to turn into something smaller. The Sword of Summer showed Magnus its ability of speaking, and it asked for a better name to be called at than Sumarbrander. “you know, Sumarbrander is a really long name, and I’ve never liked it much. (p. 327)” So Magnus named his sword Jack. Jack opened another door to Magnus when it talked to Magnus for the first time, and Jack made this the moment where there’s finally a hint of friendship between them. Jack accepted Magnus as its owner, and was willing to show more of itself. They started to understand each other more, and payed more respect to each other. With the humor and easy-going personality in both of them, Jack and Magnus had chatted and joked throughout the later parts of the story, brought their relationships even
