The Switch Up
Middle School transitions us through an awkward stage in our life. Our faces are decorated with blemishes, pizza is trapped in our braces, and our pre-teen stage proves us to be hormonal. With a positive outlook, we are invited to sleepovers, crushes become boyfriends, and lunchtime is full of fun and laughter— but not for everyone. For me middle school was lonesome. With such an important time of my life, I perceived myself as anything but significant. In my circumstance I felt miserable, but soon a tragic accident would leave me with a reformed outlook on life.
Shortly past midnight, my parents rushed me to the hospital for severe abdominal pain. Following a few tests, my doctor ruled my agony to be an ulcer in the lining of my stomach. He concluded that I would be fine and ordered morphine for my pain. My heart raced when I suddenly noticed a peculiar woman holding my hand. Her confusion grew as I screamed for help; Nurses scurried into the room, pinning me down on the gurney as I wailed in panic. Fortunately, my amnesia episodes quickly came to a terminal end. My mother frequently drilled me with questions, fearing I would forget her again. Hours later, my doctor deliberated on my bizarre reaction to the medicine. He

I could not walk, yet there were a million other things I was capable of. “Looking on the bright side” might seem like a silly thing to do; nonetheless, this phrase has encompassed my life and given me so much joy for the days to come. There is always a blessing received in any situation. Enduring a catastrophic event, I was heartbroken; however, I have been given an understanding of self-worth through the process. This tragic accident introduced to me a profound understanding of true love people have for others and taught me to not hesitate to express it. My heart overflows with gratitude and forever holds a nostalgic longing for my middle school

When I first walked into the Hillsborough Middle School hallways as a seventh grader I was small, quiet, and fragile. I could not stand up for myself, or speak to others without getting nervous. Fall of 2010 and spring of 2012 were the 2 semesters I was inactive after graduating from the University of San Diego. In the fall of 2010 I was acclimating to a life back in Los Angeles and actively looking for a position where I was serving others. I secured a tutoring position in an underserved community for students in grades k thru 12 in the areas of math, science, and English for a startup tutoring company called 1 On 1 Academic Tutors. My greatest competitive advantage became my hunger to succeed and to actualize the life that my parents envisioned for me when they migrated from Mexico. Within the year, I was promoted to Senior Contract Administrator and by fall of 2012 I was creating spreadsheets alongside graphs and analyzing them…

Sometimes A failure isn’t a failure at all it’s just a minor setback. I learned this at the beginning of my 10th grade year. My teacher had told my classmates and I that we were able to be dual enrollment students at Germanna Community College. She informed us that we would have to take an entrance exam to be placed in classes that were suitable for us. When she said this we told her that we’d be ready and that we’d pass with no problems.…

Prompt #5 Come the end of my Sophomore year, I faced an impasse. I had committed myself almost entirely to band. It encapsulated my life. All of my activities, all of my friends, all of my hobbies, all had one thing in common: they all centered around band. As one might expect in such a situation, I began to yearn for something else.…

I could only watch as my parents sent my friends away. I was to practice the piano, not waste my time watching the hummingbirds go by. I was supposed to be a model student, and digging mud holes was apparently unnecessary in achieving that goal. I was, unlike my friends, going to be someone happy. Except I wasn't.…

Years ago when I was in middle school, I would typically spend time with the same people. Resulting in not being fully aware of my other classmates and the controversy that occurred. Though one day I noticed a girl who had quite long straight hair. She had a little dawn-tinted bow that would sustain her side bangs, while her skin was a lightish brown. The girl was called out by other students, preferably girls when we were lined up in line in the hallway with half the class.…

There was not a single piece of leather furniture that lacked an intricate map I had scratched into it with my grubby four-year-old fingernails. Every wall and flat surface had Sharpie murals of vast cotton candy skies and family trees made of dogs as soon as I discovered how to hold a pen. My parents never tried to stifle my creativity. They urged me to pursue artistry and offered every tool conceivable to develop my creative skills. Growing up hearing my father jam out on guitar and watching my mother lose herself painting silk (among the many other hobbies they both tend to), my inspiration never ran dry.…

A time I was focused on the past and future which lead me to miss out on an opportunity was when there was an assembly about graduation during my senior year of high school. During the assembly most of the time was in my mind. The thoughts that were in my mind consisted of the past and how it changed me in general. Also, I kept reminiscing about the moments with my sister from childhood to where we were and could not believe how we made it through a lot. However, my mind shifted to the future of what is yet to come such as college and how my friends were deciding to go to college out of state.…

This article is, in my opinion, an example of how personal narrative can sometime confuse the author’s purpose. In order to frame her arguments she discussed her experiences with her family, and specifically how she was born a twin to a stillborn sister. She explains her families lack of coping and how her family effected her life, but I failed to focus on the overarching idea that she wanted to get out because of how distracting the stories from her personal life are. Instead found myself thinking that her story was strangely personal without much justification for why it was this way. While the point of her article, the balance between truth and respect, was somewhat present overall, the sections of personal narrative that she decided to include muddled it.…

I think back to this day often and the second chance of life I received. How if I had succeeded I wouldn’t be able to see life through these new eyes and experience all the beautiful things I have now. I wouldn’t have found my passion for live music or my career calling in psychology. I realized that the life I was living then was not the life I was living now or would be living a month, a year or even ten years from now. I’ve learned to appreciate life and cope with my illness rather than it consuming me.…
