Left to Tell is the survival story of a Rwandan Tutsi, Immaculee Ilibagiza. Immaculee shares the power of faith in God as she describes the physical, mental, and specifically spiritual obstacles she faced in the 1993 Rwandan genocide. Rwanda consists of three tribes, the rare pygmy Twas, the minority Tutsis, and the majority Hutus. Hutu extremists turned on their Tutsi neighbors after the country’s president Habyarimana’s plane was shot down. After 100 days of slaughter, the death toll climbed to 800,000. Instead of turning her back on God and blaming Him for allowing such suffering to envelope her life like many of her friends did, Immaculee embraced prayer and meditation. Immaculee placed her trust in her old boyfriend John, when she thought she loved him. Through the verse in 1 Corinthians, God showed Immaculee the kind of love He intended all humans to experience. "That was the kind of love I wanted, and I knew it was what God wanted each and every one of us to have" (Ilibagiza 121). If God is love then the devil is hatred. She disregarded the devil’s repeated attempts to weaken her faith with doubt, fear, or hatred and instead spent her days in hiding by meditating and praying to God. Surrounded by pointless bloodshed and violent hatred, Immaculee accepted that God was not to blame for the evil that infected her country. God is always in control, He knows the ramifications for every decision ever made, and knowing that He still granted man freewill. He allows Satan to influence humanity because God wanted human’s to truly experience love. Even when humans choose to abuse God’s gift by hurting others, and therefore hurting the Lord Himself, He still loves them. Love is the foundation of Immaculee’s unshakable faith in God and her success in inspiring people.
