The speed of the time, comes as a day’s journey or a life’s journey, Christina Rossetti says “from morn to night“ and “slow dark hours begin”, as one rest after the sun starts to go down, the battle between the good and evil, as the light meaning heaven, the light at the end of the tunnel, or rebirth and dark meaning hell or a negative outcome. Zasadinski says, “Symbolically, "day" signifies light, vision, awareness, warmth, and, if one extends the metaphor to include daybreak, rebirth. Each of these attributes might easily be used to describe a positive view of the afterlife. Instead,Christina equates the afterlife in "Up-Hill" with night and its sinister connotations of blindness, ignorance, and even oblivion.…

Heather Ostman’s article “The Sun Also Rises” from the Encyclopedia of the American Novel begins with an explanation of the book’s title. The Sun also Rises gets its name from Ecclesiastes, which is also quoted at the beginning of the book along with a quote from Gertrude Stein about the Lost Generation. Ostman notes that the connection of Ecclesiastes hopefulness with Stein’s hopelessness sustain the feeling of meaninglessness and alienation of the characters of the book following the Great War. In his emotive lieder In der Frühe, Hugo Wolf utilizes key center discrepancies between piano accompaniment and the vocal line, lack of clear cadential motion, and quick-tempered movements through various tonal centers for the purpose of demonstrating the emotional complexity of a lost man struggling to find purposefulness in his daily life. Throughout his lieder, Wolf declares a key clearly with the left hand of the piano outlining the tonic triad; however, as soon as the vocal line enters, the melodic line heavily centers the dominant of the key. This is displayed as early as the first measure. Here we see the piano introduce the piece in d minor with a D pedal bass that sustains through until the first shift to a new key center.…
