The Sun Also Rises Robert Cohn Analysis

Improved Essays
n The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway, Jake is a very harsh, very bitter character especially when contrasted with the naivety and frivolousness of Robert Cohn. When Jake talks or references Cohn it is in a distasteful manner masked with unimpressed indifference. While at the beginning of the book Jake describes Cohn as physically strong and masculine he then goes to discredit this by branding him unmemorable and childlike due to him being "moulded by two women who trained him" (Hemingway 52). Instead of making Robert Cohn out to be desirable and interesting person, Jake portrays him as static and one dimensional. This is due to his innate jealousy of Robert that Jake himself does not even realize. Cohn is the physical embodiment of virility

In every chapter of The Sun Also Rises, every single main character appears to consume at least one alcoholic beverage. And if they don’t drink on one occasion, they will definitely make it up on a different occasion. Unrestrained consumption of alcohol is a common element throughout the novel, which may be explained by the Prohibition in America from 1920 to 1933 that is alluded to in the quote. The overindulgent drinking could be a reaction to the prevention by law of the manufacture and sale of alcohol in Jake’s home country at the time. At this point, Robert Cohn and Jake Barnes are very far apart, both literally and metaphorically.…

Previous to consummation, Billy would stutter in his speech, showing how his insecurity had a physical manifestation. Here, his loss of stutter indicates his loss of inhibition over his sexual prowess. Billy’s development quickly degenerates as Ratched re-instills his insecure nature when she says, “‘What worries me, Billy,’ she said --- [Bromden] could hear the change in her voice --- ‘is how your poor mother is going to take this’” (314). Ratched’s condescending attitude demonstrates the power she wields as her change in voice signifies how she manipulates Billy to lose his newly found self-confidence. Likewise, the topic of male insecurity caused by women is also present in Hemingway’s…

The Lost Generation is a term that poet Gertrude Stein used to describe the generation of men and women whose experiences in World War I undermined their beliefs in manhood, morality, justice, and love. Without these ideals to rely on, the Lost Generation lived an aimless existence characterized by apathy; they became morally and psychologically lost. In The Sun Also Rises, Jake and his group of friends are part of this Lost Generation, but some embody the traits more than others. Jake’s knowledge of the fruitlessness of the Lost Generation’s way of life differentiates him from his friends, but he is trapped in this lifestyle and is still subject to its faults. Jake’s friends are unsuspecting of their status in the Lost Generation, while…

The woman on the cup shifts her attention from one man to the other, never wanting to make up her mind. This squabble could be representative of Mike and Cohn disputing over Brett, and her inability to focus solely on one of them. These allusions in Hemingway’s novel link The Sun Also Rises to the pastoral nature of the Idylls of Theocritus. As Hemingway displays, Jake, Cohn, and Lady Brett have narrow perspectives of their world that are focused on individual, human concerns rather than the world as a whole.…

Karl Marx is a renowned leader and philosopher known for preaching his beliefs regarding socialism and differences between the social classes, and his viewpoints on society eventually grew into the principles which make up the Marxist lense. The Marxist lense can be used to analyze works of literature by timeless authors such as Ernest Hemingway. Marx was a believer that the primary cause of historical change was social class warfare. He also felt that the state or government has always used its power to oppress and exploit the laboring masses for the benefit of the upper elite, though it is questionable whether or not the general population noticed this occurring. Specifically, Marx labeled the powerful, revered upper class the bourgeoisie.…
