The loss of self control, the drunkenness, and the attitudes of the Lost Generation are impeccably similar to that of today’s young adults. The Lost Generation uses alcohol and relationships to conceal the pain from their lives that they are leading. Today’s generation uses similar deterrents to leave their pain hidden from the rest of the world. In Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, he uses the aftermath of World War I to illustrate the lives of nearly every young person, known as the Lost Generation. Hemingway spotlights the lives of Brett, Jake, Robert, and countless others to show just how this reckless behavior destroys the person and the surrounding people involved. Brett, Jake, and a less-important character, Count, are all sitting together and drinking in Jake’s apartment. They are all having a lovely time when the Count talks with Brett about her social drinking and how it affects her: “‘You’re always drinking, my dear. Why don’t you just talk’” (Hemingway 65)? The Count openly states that Brett has a drinking problem. This is common during the era of people involved in World War I. People were not able to sit down and discuss the current events without having a drink or getting drunk. This partially has to do with the lifestyle that the war put these people through. Many were so emotionally damaged that they couldn’t be socially acceptable back in their country. This is evident when Brett constantly fills with liquor instead of communicating her feelings. Another example of socially destructive behavior in this novel is when Mike gives a social norm for all the people in the Lost Generation: ”Drunk all day and spend all their time beating their poor old mothers’” (Hemingway 172).
