The Development of Romanticism vs Realism in The Sun Also Rises
Trauma can completely alter the way someone lives their life. Be it physical trauma, some cannot physically do a specific task anymore. Be it mental trauma a person may not be able to function without assistance. Be it emotional trauma, a person may never be able to trust again. One thing is for certain, war is trauma of all sorts. WWI caused all three types of trauma, which impacted the world immensely. Before the war, the world was a sanguine place. Then the romantic stereotypes were abandoned for intense realism. B. Thesis: This theme could have been triggered by the trauma in which the characters face as a result of the war. Hemingway incorporates romanticism vs. realism into the novel through the characters and what they have overcome in the novel.

because when Cohn is talking about the trip to south America Jake tells him that “you can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another… I’ve tried all that” (19),

III. Along with Jake, Brett is also a realist
A. Her war trauma was the death of the love of her life from dysentery
1. Jake says to Cohn, “during the war. Her own true love had just kicked off with the dysentery” (46)
2. Was a nurse, during war, met guy that died in the hospital along with her dreams, then she met Jake
3. She is a realist now, is filling void with promiscuity
IV. Cohn is only surviving romantic in novel.
A. He doesn’t like bullfighting, even though that it is jakes passion
1. “nobody ever lives their lives all the way up except bull fighters.”(18)
2. Therefore, Jake and Cohn are foil characters
3. Beginning of novel is detailed is a detailed description, helps reader to understand the contrast between Cohn and others
V. In summary, Brett and Jake are hard boiled realists whom harshly contrast Cohn’s romantic opinion. Cohn is the aforementioned glimmer of hope and ray of sunshine in a gloomy realistic world which is why the title of the novel is the sun also rises.
