Each character deals with these issues in their own way. Jake is content with his life, until he realizes what his life could be if Brett were a part of it. Cohn is discontent and seeks adventure to make more of a name for himself. Brett is discontent with her love life. Her and Jake want to be together, but Jake cannot love in the way other men can because he got castrated in the war. Therefore, Brett tries to find love with other men, but does not succeed. The opposition of these two characters helps them change each other’s outlook on life. “‘I can’t stand it to think my life is going so fast and I’m not really living it.’ ‘Nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bull-fighters,’” (Page 10). In this passage, Cohn is showing discontent and Jake is telling him to live with it. Jake is fine with his life for the most part, except for the fact that he wants to be with Brett. “‘Don’t you love me?’ ‘Love you? I simply turn to jelly when you touch me… when I think of the hell I’ve put chaps through. I’m paying for it all now,’” (Page 26). Brett exclaims that she loves Jake. She feels like she could never be able to love someone because she’s screwed up so much in the past. Jake, Cohn, and Brett each deal with identity crisis because they are human beings who have
