In the novel the main theme was the lost generation and the focus on womanhood and femininity. Frances was the traditional woman, who wanted marriage and a family. Brett on the other hand was a flapper. She refused to wear stockings, cut her hair short and when asked to grow it out she refused, she had sex with multiple guys despite the fact that she was engaged at one point.
