A prime example is the scene in which Jake snidely comments about how Cohn was dominated by his first wife and later by Frances, yet his relationship with Brett is incredibly similar. Jake is frequently bending over backwards, to meet Brett’s wishes even when they are directly opposed by his own. Another example is how Jake mocks Cohn’s naïve set of morals but this is only because of Jake’s anxiety over his own immorality.…

Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, authors driven by their lost hopes and dreams, of whose literature is still studied today to understand the adversities and bewilderment of the past. Their novels, The Great Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises both explore the motif of achieving this American Dream throughout the representation of superficial women. Women in both novels portray their changing role in society whilst in relationships with men whom they easily manipulate and establish that they are not able to love genuinely. Submerged with the idea that Daisy Buchannan, a woman of…

After the climax of the novel, Gatsby unveils the mystery behind his façade, and reveals the root of his love for Daisy. The passage is intertwined with Nick’s first person perspective and the third person narrative of Gatsby’s memories. Together, these perspectives establish conflicting, fluctuating tones and a greater understanding of the plot. Fitzgerald’s usage of tone, syntax, and diction cooperate with the utilization of multiple perspectives forming the author’s unique cinematic style that works to create the dramatic irony in Gatsby’s love affair and applies a modern interpretation to the romantic conflict (148-151).…
