Have you ever received something super small that meant more to you then it did someone else? The Suitcases is about three young girls who got everything taken from them and their journey on finding a place to call home. After their mother's death, their father started to disappear, he began to not care for them. With Anne six, Betty seven, and Carolyn four, the girls were not able to take care of themselves. A lady in black came and picked up the girls and the only things they took were the things they were carrying. On Anne’s journey through foster care and orphanages she begins to collect small items to add to her suitcase, her one and only possessions. When Christmas rolled around Anne and her sisters were still at the Thompson Orphanage. On Christmas morning Santa brought them all a gift; Anne received a doll. The doll had red yarn hair, with a blue dress; Anne adored her, she chose to name this doll Emily. Anne loved this doll; she always played with her and kept her right by her side.“I placed Emily in the bottom of my suitcase, for fear that if I carried her out in my arms they would make me leave her behind”(48).The author proves the significant meaning of her doll. Anne fears that if she does not hide from the orphanage that they will take the doll from her. Now she can have something she earned as a keepsake.Anne's foster brother, Bucky, taught her to play a game using marbles. Anne learned to play and she began to play at school. Anne got pretty good and started collecting them and keeping them in her suitcase, so she can always have them. “By the end of the week I had thirty-two marbles in one little white bag in my suitcase”Anne was so proud of herself for being able to earn marbles. The author shows that even though it is a set of marbles, Anne is excited to have something she got rewarded for.
