This story is written about 3 orphan children during the Great Depression. The mother dies and the oldest child does not go to school. Their grandfather used to take care of them but now he just lays in bed for most of the day and they do not go for walks anymore. The three children live in Charlotte, NC and before their mother passed away they would go on walks until their legs ached and could not walk anymore. When the kids got tired dad would put them on his shoulders and sometimes they would go on a walk to North Tryon Street or even the main part of town. Father would sing like no one’s business but once mother died he did not sing at all anymore even when they were so sad about stuff.
