1531 Words 7 Pages
Many people get depressed at one point or another throughout life. Whether it’s caused by death of a family member, environmental stress, or mental illness, feelings of depression can become difficult for many people. Unfortunately some people get so depressed as a result of their mental illness or life circumstances, that they consider suicide as an option to escape from their emotional pain. “Suicide doesn’t end the chances of life getting worse, it eliminates the possibility of it ever getting any better.” – Tennessee Williams
Problems that precipitate suicide are usually temporary ones, yet suicide is a permanent solution to these temporary troubles. Life can be extremely painful and difficult and may appear to last forever. Unfortunately, some people think that suicide will end all of those troubles. Survivors of attempted suicide consistently express relief that their attempt failed. Many are thankful that they are still alive today. Tragically, increasing numbers of people are choosing this option.
According to Mental Health, over the last 30 years the suicide rate in young people has more than tripled. The most dramatic increase in the suicide rate has occurred in the 15 to 24 age bracket, which is mostly college aged students. The most tragic statistic is that suicide is second to automobile accidents as the leading cause of death among 18 to 24-year-olds.
