TV’s are one of the many items that make a household living room a place of enjoyment. TV’s provide access to many forms of media, ranging from political talk shows to entertainment specials. However, no matter what programming is on, one thing remains constant: commercials. Commercials are often seen as a nuisance when they interrupt your favorite program just when before a major plot point; however, some commercials attempt to send a deeper message to the audience. For example, in Dove’s newest line of commercials, they promote body positivity. Through aural devices, rhetorical devices, and consumer testimony, Dove promotes the use of their product through providing a message that the use of their product will make the user realize their own true worth despite what the consumer thinks of his or her image. The success of the Dove commercial can be attributed in part to the use …show more content…
The use of aural devices set the tone and severity of the message from the beginning. The appeal to ethos through actor credibility and pathos due to personal testimony emphasizes how important it is for a commercial to use rhetorical skills to convey an effective message. Without rhetorical devices in the commercial, it would be ineffective. Consumer testimony in how using a Dove product is the key to spreading a message of body positivity. Through the use of a Dove product, these customers, who have been plain-folked, feel more confident about their self-image. Thus, they can attest that the use of a Dove product in the everyday life has been changing their interactions with everyone around them. The process that Dove uses creates a very effective commercial that conveys a non-conventional topic. The commercial does encourage the viewer to purchase Dove products and experience a change similar to the ones the consumers in the commercial
