The suburban schools of Virginia had been segregated for decades with schools for whites and schools for blacks. In 1971, integration was federally mandated, forcing two schools to close, and integrate African Americans and Caucasians into T.C. Williams High School.
Football was a way of life in Alexandria, Virginia, moreover, the community celebrated every game and victory as if it were a holiday. Remember the Titans is a story about the T.C. Williams High School football team after the federally mandated integration.
The story is centered on Herman Boone, the African American football coach who is hired to replace the Titans Caucasian head coach Bill Yoast. Coach Yoast deliberated leaving after losing his position to Boone, however, the

Remember the Titans is a story regarding conflict, racism, and football. In Alexandria, Virginia, forced integration has resulted in two schools closing and consolidating, this assimilation includes the football team which is fraught with anger. The white players do not want to play with the African American players, and vice versa. When Boone first met the Titan coaching staff, it was clear he was not wanted, however, he remained polite, and respectful.
Boone exhibited an autocratic, transactional leadership style, ruling by fear and consequences with the players and coach Yoast. Boone set the tone by showing his legitimate authority and control in an attempt to create structure and order, for example, on the buses traveling to pre-season boot camp, Boone forced integration of the players based on offensive and defensive roles rather than race. Yoast understood the sentiments and pain experienced by the team and spoke to Coach Boone on their behalf. Moreover, Yoast was a man of integrity as witnessed when he did not allow the game to be thrown so that he could become head coach and make it to the Hall of Fame. He stood up for the team regardless of the outcome, for the sake of the team.
Team Captain, Gerry Bertier was a conscientious authentic person who was steadfast in his beliefs and was not afraid to stand up and act on his values. For example, when his girlfriend asked him to come with her, he chose to remain with his teammates and did not falter in his commitment. .Bertier, although an informal leader, was a transformational leader in every aspect. He exhibited fairness and cohesiveness by defending his decision to cut his friend Ray from the team secondary to his blatant racial prejudice.
