When the name Muhammad is mentioned what comes to one’s mind? Do you automatically think of a terrorist or a Muslim? Or maybe you know someone who is named Muhammad, which wouldn’t be uncommon since it is the most common given name to the Muslim people. For most people the word prophet would not be your first thought, but for a lot of people that is exactly what they think of. I feel the Muslim community has a bad reputation not just because of a few people but partly because a lot of people do not have a clear understanding of who exactly Muhammad was or what he represented. Even though there will probably never be any peace on earth anytime soon, I do have to say I am intrigued to learn more about how someone or a group of people are trying to accomplish this.
As strange as it may seem Muhammad did not begin to hear the voice of God until he was at the age of 40, but then again Moses and David did not hear Gods word until they were older as well. Muhammad at first had a very difficult time spreading his word in Mecca, he was ridiculed and some people even said he was insane. To reach heaven Muslims must accept belief in Allah as the Supreme Being and the only God and must say the Islamic creed with conviction at least once during their lives. This would count as the first pillar of faith and the Islamic Creed is La ilaha illa Allah; Muhammad rasul Allah. This translates into “There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” The first part of this creed was extremely important to Muhammad, he did not even allow people to paint pictures of anything or anyone because he felt this was a way of worshipping someone else other than Allah. For prayer all Muslims had to pray five times a day, morning, midday, midafternoon, sunset and at nightfall. Before they pray they must cleanse themselves of impurities and during prayer they must face Mecca and perform a series of ritual gestures that includes bowing and prostration. For charity all Islam followers have to contribute one-fortieth of their income to the needy apart from also giving to the poor. For fasting Muslims are not allowed to eat, drink, take medicine or have any sexual intercourse from when the sun comes up to when the sun goes down.
