There has been many incidents about sexual assault on campuses nation wide and even three this past fall semester at Radford University. My peers would be concerned about this topic once the realize the severalty of sexual assault specifically on college campuses. There I questioned, “Has sexual assault increased on college campuses or has awareness made students more comfortable reporting sexual assault, thus increasing reported rates?” I choose this research topic because I believe it effects not only me but my classmates. There dean of students, Lisa Evaneski reported “That means more reported cases is a good thing, attributes more reported cases to increasing awareness.” Lisa Evaneski believed her women’s resource center and on campus awarness has been effective. She see’s the improvement in her students lack of fear to report sexual assault issues. “I think the number reported is still low, but yes, I think our efforts in talking about this with students and employees, we have seen the number rise (which is good!),” This article shows some people are looking at increasing rates as a positive result, which is being more open minded and positive to the situation. In due time hopefully the bystander programs and class discussions will decrease the sexual assault rates on campuses. But to eventually get to that point possible viable solutions could be for every student to take their part. “Peers are influential in determining student behavior and deeming what ideas, beliefs, and actions are acceptable”(Lovern). In this article “The Student Leaders Role in Preventing Sexual Assaults on College Campuses” they provide the reader with a variety way you can help your campus. To stand up against sexual violence you could take action if you see something, listen, believe and be there for peers that may have experienced it and need someone to talk to. Theres also programming level intervention that can be initiated by student leaders that can get the whole campus involved like clubs, greek life, and athletics and protect your school as a whole and one family.“A student leader’s presence can make a difference in situations of sexual violence, but a student leader intervening could change a peer’s life forever.”
