There were six pieces presented in the Student Concert Series. I want to talk about five of them.

The first piece was Duo Sonata. It was composed by Gregory Wanamaker in 2002. Its style is modern and its genre is a duo sonata. Sonata is a piece that is composed for a small number of instruments. This piece is for two instrument to play, so it is called duo sonata. It was performed by two students. Reese Burgan played saxophone and Courtney White played clarinet. The piece is not so long and they played it very well. It has four part: Departure, Arrival, Scherzo, and Arrival. I think there was a mistake in the program. The first Arrival should be Elegy, so the piece has Departure, Elegy, Scherzo and Arrival. They played each part separate by a stop. I thought that they were busy to turn to the next page so each part were not immediately continue the next part. The piece 's movement was different between each part and the movement of each part changed by time. The Departure was fast. Then it slowed down in the Elegy. It became fast in the Scherzo and Arrival. Each part also had different mood. The two instrument were played together making good sound.

It was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. The piece is from the Baroque era and its genre is partita. Partita is an instrumental piece composed of a series of variations, as a suite. In the title, it states that the composition is for "solo violin" but it was performed by an undergraduated student-Zach Benator with a vibraphone. Although it was a sad piece, I felt it was not as sad as when played by a violin. The sound was gentle and clarity. The vibraphone made this piece become soft and relaxable. The piece was sad but it was not

The group that I will be reviewing in this paper is the student combo that I enjoyed most of all, the group that performed first and was directed by Dr. Routenberg. The group consisted of Andrew Fiorini on the trumpet, Noah Johnson on the trombone, Meghan Walls playing the piano, Andrew Moser on the electric bass, and Collin St. Mary on the drums. Regarding the music…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

The concert was held at the Serentean Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At the concert, I was an amateur, listener to this type of music. I had never witnessed a live performance of this musical style before. I would consider myself to be a passive listener.…

The 1st movement is kind of Sonata-Allegro form. The opining melody of the first movement was soft and slow with a touch of melancholy and I love this type. It starts with a softly-lovely flute and then the violins with strings accompanying. The violins are way up in the high part of their pitch which making it more refreshing. The tempo is not fast at the beginning, but then it become faster a little bit with violins.…

The piece opened with lots of energy. The rhythm at measure 10 was very together, and the dynamics from measure 6 to 10 created a cool build. The transition to measure 27 was smooth and efficient. In the “Polar Express” section, there could have been more dynamic change and even more volume in general. However, the underlying percussion part gave the section an energetic, upbeat feel.…

The style period of this composer was the Baroque period. I disliked this composition since I did not feel that the flow of music was very good. The music was unstable since the pattern of the harmony would constantly change (Talking About Music). Moreover, I found this composition was too dense, since there were many things going on simultaneously, such as the timber would often change from different tone…
