Ballroom Observation

Observation: The student body section of the football game was most noticeable on the Heritage side and all the students seemed to be in one homogenous clump, with the exception of one or two separated groups and individuals. However, upon closer glance, the glaringly obvious racial divide clearly split the group of students down a chasm of social segregation. The divide appeared to be general accepted and almost unnoticed by the students, nothing beyond the ordinary, and the behaviors observed were consistent in the group as a whole. Most of the glaring behaviors exhibited by the students unfortunately revolved around sexuality. The cheerleaders were uncharacteristically suggestive in their dance choices, having an obvious effect on the young male onlookers we observed. Even the students in the student section were extremely sexually suggestive in their behavior, in their dancing or even making direct and noticeable hand gestures after being prompted by a seemingly innocent lyric in the marching band’s performance. I constantly felt the need to go and sit with a student sitting by themselves and talk to them about the friend they have in Jesus or go up to the girl whose boundaries are being continually pushed down and love her as Christ does. If anything, this event was, for me, a reinforcement of calling. My heart was utterly broken and for many days following it was most of what I talked about with friends and family back home. Unknowingly these students gave me a great gift by breaking my heart, they showed me as nothing else could the importance of youth ministry. They gave me a glimpse of their world and their struggles, hurts, and wrongs and, though perhaps not identified by them, their behavior pleaded for the mercy and love of our Almighty Father. It taught me true importance of being a Christ-like leader in youth

In Odessa, Texas, only one thing matters. Not college, or politics, or work, but high school football. In the book Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream by H.G. Bissinger, the town of Odessa is placed under a microscope as the reader gets to experience the intersection of sport, race, and gender in a small Texas town. “Football stood at the very core of what the town was about, not on the outskirts, not on the periphery. It had nothing to do with entertainment and everything to do with how people felt about themselves.”…

Anderson analyzes the opposition that specifically high school students faced. The issue of segregation is tackled in Anderson’s monograph, specifically in Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Violence and mass resistance perpetuated a racial struggle that shows the oppression that black students experienced directly. (CLARIFY SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES) Anderson confronts this ignorance by saying, “But some of the Little Rock “mob” were school children, armed with nothing more lethal than school books.…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

Racism, unfortunately, is something that black students still struggle with at predominantly white institutions, especially when it has to do with greek life. Lawrence Ross explores racism and how administration tries to minimize the severity on college campuses in his book Blackballed. In chapter one titled, Jim Crow Greek Row, he focuses in on a particular incident that happened involving the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at the University of Oklahoma. Ross argues that white privilege influences America’s reactions to race incidents on college campuses and that black students are put into situations where they feel disconnected from the rest of the school, only belonging where they play sports. Ross successfully gets his message…

Without the relationships I have made with the girls in my grade at Northwest I am not sure if I would have even continued my walk with God. Not only have my friends been a major influence, but so have my teachers. During class they just have shown the light of Jesus through their teaching. I have embraced the style of teaching from a christian worldview, which I had never had before. Some teachers have sat with me and talked for hours, and that has really opened my eyes as to how much they want to pour into us.…

I continued to look for a place to serve more in and help more people but I could not find anything that really interested me. When he asked me to help him along with a few others to grow the student ministry I was ecstatic. He had told us that we were the seven like there were the twelve. I think this is my greatest accomplishment as a leader because even though I was a young student he saw a leader unlike many adults that normally think kids should be put to smaller tasks.…

The movie Remember the Titans is an excellent example for sociological theories. Many topics can be observed within this movie, but two of the most prominent topics that we covered this semester are social structure, more specifically race and prejudices, and group processes, focusing on status construction. This movie takes place in a small town in North Carolina that has to deal with the shifting racial makeup of their football team, therefore high school, and therefore community. There is a lot of conflict not only between the different racial groups, but also within racial groups when people have different opinions of what is acceptable. The combination of the two racial groups leads to interesting observations of racial opinions and group…

This research study observes the protection of gender and sexuality in a female-dominated sport, concentrating precisely on 5th and 6th grade boys who aspire to cheer. Data was gathered at Isla Vista Elementary using one-on-one interviews and observing first hand involvement with cheerleading activity. The interviews and activity provided me with themes considering the stigmatization of boy cheerleaders, the necessity to maintain a heterosexual status, and approaches of saving face. The findings signified that the gender and sexuality of these young boys who aspire to cheer are frequently questioned. In turn to affirm their gender and sexuality as masculine and heterosexual, the boys make inappropriate remarks regarding their female counterparts.…

Calvary Commission, the seminary that I stayed at, is located a few miles out of town on a land that seems to never end. I could walk miles and still find myself to be on Calvary Commission’s property. The first day I was there, my group and I went on a little hike up to the prayer chapel, which sat on the top of a hill, surrounded by trees, and a bonfire pit stood a few feet away. This was my group’s first real exposure to how great the people at Calvary Commission are.…
