The Student: A New Immigrant From France

Decent Essays
The student is a new immigrant from France. She comes from a low socioeconomic background and financial difficulties at home. She usually arrives without a lunch and without the study equipment and stationary that the school has provided her with. In spite of everything, she comes regularly to classes and studies well, showing strong motivation. I spoke with the councilor and the homeroom teacher and they notified the welfare authorities, but I haven't seen any improvement. On the days I was teaching, I brought her food at recess and spoke with her; her father beats her mother.
I work with Michal on reading. I use a book, learning games, lottery, puzzles, and memory games. On days that I don't come to school, she sits with her twin sister

The power of knowledge is something every human should attain, but it does not always come at an ease. In Bich Minh Nguyen’s, “ The Good Immigrant Student,” she writes about the hardships and racism she endures while trying to receive a good education. Frederick Douglas, a former slave and author of, “ Learning to read and Write”, describes his determination to be literate, while at the same time explains the obstacles he had to overcome. Both Nguyen and Douglass use imagery, include personal anecdotes, and create tone, to explain how in order to receive an education hierarchies are maintained in the process.…

Today we focused on organizing his notebook and reading the book "Maniac Magee. " Nathan enjoys talking about the book with me and has increasingly shown interest in reading more of the story to learn about the characters. He does struggle at times with reading specific vocabulary words and with reading at a certain pace. I recommend that Nathan get into the habit of reading more frequently aloud so that he can build up his confidence. When we first started reading his book, he did not want to read aloud because he did not want to make mistakes or take too long to read, but the more we read together, the more interested he is in getting through the book.…

While the European governments were enjoying the benefits of a new labor workforce, and continued promoting immigration, their natural born citizens were violently xenophobic. Such behaviors lead to a major divide between the people. Preceding the year 1919, many French lobbyists feared losing their Algerian labor workforce. Their attempts to denounce the stereotypes associated with Algerian men, such as excessively sexual and aggressive, were unsuccessful.…

Immigration is the movement of foreigners into a country in order to live there. France received large amounts of immigrants during the 19th and 20th century. The country used to strongly advocate assimilation until the 2005 French riots, then they encouraged immigrants to retain their culture.
