Many people are subjected to advertisements everyday and whether they know it or not, their views are slowly morphing to that of what the advertisements portray. It is a way of business and in turn the media has a major role in the fact that advertisements cause objectification. An example of this is “‘exposure to sexually objectifying television programs is associated with an increase in viewers’ definition of their physical selves in terms of how the body appears, rather than what it can do’” (McKay, T. (n.d.). Female Self-Objectification: Causes, Consequences and Prevention). The subliminal messages that are secretly put into these ads creates a negative outlook that an individual didn 't have before. This objectification that these ads produce are a key in promoting their products, such as makeup commercials or weight loss advertisements, are such examples of ‘selling their products’ as one might say. This objectification can “suggest that appearance monitoring, which is present in self-objectification, can increase shame and appearance anxiety and diminish awareness of internal bodily states” (Greening, K. It is demonstrated through magazines and the unrealistic expectations that are portrayed in the media. It is also shown through the vast internet, which can steadily increase the amount of self-objectification that females experience. Lastly, it is portrayed through many advertisements of which are consecutively shown on television. Women have come a long way from where they were in history, however, despite the continued support from feminists, objectification is still a massive problem in today 's society. This biased view that young girls have idolized of the ‘perfect’ female body shows that females still have a long way to develop.
