I believe that Cole Matthews has failed himself. Why I think this is because he had the opportunity to fix himself while he was on the island, but he decided not to. Instead he had done things while he was banished to make himself more angry. In chapter 2 Cole had been given a shelter that would help him survive on the island. His father had payed for it all and that’s what got Cole really worked up. On page 24-25 Cole had walked into the shelter and and searched the area. If Cole would have relaxed and thought about what he should do and think that his father wasn’t the one who payed for the shelter he would’ve been fine, but he let his anger get the best of him. He had also let Garvey down because of his anger. Uncle Tom’s Cabin and its Flaws In James Baldwin’s essay titled “Everybody’s Protest Novel” Baldwin analyzes how Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is solely written to expose the evils of slavery and by doing that she has created a morally flawed novel that directly reflects the morality of human nature. Baldwin points out that Stowe’s novel is full of stereotypes that society is slow to find the truth behind. Baldwin proposes the question, “How is it that we are so loath to make a further journey than that made by Mrs. Stowe, to discover and reveal something a little closer to the truth” (Baldwin 533).…

Race relations are a problem that have plagued society for a number of centuries, from Columbus’ poor treatment of the Native Americans, to today’s plentiful race related stereotypes. Time after time, racism has been a horrible practice of some, while many have tried to eradicate the issue. Slavery was a particularly dark period of race relations in America, in the form of white men who claimed ownership of his black brothers. This was solely on the basis of a pseudoscience that they were inferior, and thus weren 't worthy of basic human rights. It was a sordid period in human history, yet some of history’s great leaders and heroes arose in opposing this great evil.…

Christopher Johnson McCandless went on a grand adventure, but did not come back to regale the experiences he had to his friends and family. His death was the talk of the nation for a short while, so there are many opinions about Chris’s actions. Some think he just had to be insane to do what he did. Others put him up on a pedestal, and admire him for his courage. My opinion is that Chris was not crazy, he was just a stupid, inexperienced, arrogant boy who wanted to prove he could survive on his own in the wild.…

Stretching across nearly all realms of Romanticism is the idea that individual freedom and experiences incite the imagination. Samuel Taylor Coleridge explicitly expresses this query of thought in his poem “This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison.” In addition to Coleridge, many other members of the Romantic movement also engaged in imagination-centered writing. Conversely, the Enlightenment movement opposed this emphasis on imagination, and instead, the Enlightenment movement valued scientific conclusions brought about using rational and empirical thinking. Therefore, Romanticism challenged the preexisting Enlightenment beliefs in England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.…
