The Struggle Of Ophelia And Vengeance In Shakespeare's Hamlet

During the time in which Hamlet takes place, Christianity's influence on all the characters is more impactful because Christians live by the guidelines of the ten commandments. In Hamlet one of the commandments, “honor your father and your mother.” Causes Ophelia and Hamlet to struggle throughout the play to honor their fathers by being truthful and obedient. Hamlet Sr’s ghost and Polonius take advantage of the insecurities of their children manipulating them as tools in their plots for vengeance and their own advancement. Ophelia and Hamlet’s downfall is due to their inexperience when it comes to making decisions and their naiveness and loyalty towards their parents and other people. To Hamlet it seems that he is the only one who is loyal to his father's memory because he is still mourning him. In life Hamlet Sr. was a warrior king, he stood for honor and lived by the sword and he knew that though Hamlet was not the type of man for battle, Hamlet was a calm intellectual who never caused much of a threat to Hamlet Sr. or anyone else and in life he was there to protect his son so he never demanded anything but obedience. When the ghost appears to Hamlet and asks of Hamlet.“If thou didst ever thy dear father love- Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” the ghost knows that he asking a great deal from a person who was never raised or showed how to live by the sword and how to avenge. Still Hamlet doesn’t question why his father is asking this of him.
