Do not be afraid to start over.” These words are true for all immigrants around the world. Some immigrants choose or are exiled & start a new life. Sometimes, I wonder what it is like to have to leave the home you’ve grown up in & forget about it. Some immigrants leave their past behind, forget about it, & start over even if they don’t want to, but they do. Esperanza Ortega from the book, “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Munoz Ryan is not much different. Esperanza was exiled from her rich mexican life, to begin a new life of hard work and discrimination as an immigrant from the U.S. Although Esperanza faced many challenges, the hardest ones were not knowing how to do chores, Marta trying to get workers to go on strike, and Mama getting Valley Fever(sickness) from the many dust storms. In the beginning, Esperanza has to know how to do chores. She has always had servants to do work for her. 1 quote from the book is, “I said I could work. I told Mama I could help. But I can’t even wash clothes or sweep floors. Does the whole camp know?” This quote, stated on page 117 is, “Burning with humiliation, Esperanza ran …show more content…
Like many of the Mexican immigrants, Esperanza worked long hours for not a lot of money. Many workers wanted to strike for better housing & more money. For example, Marta says on page 132, “ We will strike in 2 weeks…...for higher wages & better housing.” This shows that many of the immigrants were living in horrible conditions that didn’t have any running water or electricity. They couldn’t even make enough to feed their families! When some workers, like Esperanza, refused to join the strike, Marta yells at them & tells them, “You are like kittens…...small & meek animals.” who just do what the farmers tell them. This quote shows that Marta & the strikers want better living. They don’t want to be slaves, they want to be free & live their own

Just as Estrella does, the oppressed begin to get so exasperated with how they are treated, that they act out in ways that could be considered an uncharacteristic act for them. They try to change the cards they have been dealt by finding the “others” weaknesses and acting against them, using any means they have, because it is no longer an issue of right and wrong. Rather now it is an issue of people being forced to be voiceless because the “others” did not care enough about their situation or what they had to say. Viramontes not only makes it evident through her book, but it can also be seen through other tales of labor movements both fiction and…
