In the 19th century, Beowulf was written in Old English, the language of the Saxons. This epic did not have a title originally, but began to be referred to by the name of the Scandinavian hero, Beowulf, with heroic sources and virtues as the primary focus. Both the hero and the story are fiction even though historical elements run through the poem (Snell 1). There have been no records found of the known author of Beowulf so much information is not given.…

If it hadn't been for him defeating Grendel and his mother, the clan would have weakened and eventually perished. If it also hadn't been for Beowulf's known prowess, the clansmen might have not had the hope that Beowulf could have defeated Grendel, and might not have banded together to help him fight. Without Beowulf's reputation, Hrothgar could have just laughed at him for being a silly warrior, wanting to fight something that nobody else had defeated before, not giving him the chance to win. A lot of the events that took place rely on their way of life, like the tight knit clan members and their idealistic warrior lifestyles. It also helped give birth to Beowulf's kingdom, given to him by Hrothgar, so new communities could be formed, and more bonds.…

Any good king would have known that it would have been a good idea to bring many men to fight a dragon but due in part to his lack of experience, Beowulf only brought a few men to fight the dragon. The other reason Beowulf was not a great king and he did not do well is because he was still too hungry for glory. Another part of being a good king is letting the warriors do the fighting and battling and paying them later. Beowulf never stopped seeing himself as a warrior even when he started being king and his courage never ceased, this ultimately led to his demise.…
