The Boy in the Striped Pajamas portrays the overwhelming experiences of a young lad as he comes to the realization of the happenings around him. Bruno is uprooted from his townhouse in Berlin when his father is granted a promotion by the Führer. The family is then forced to relocate in Poland to reside next to Auschwitz. Upon their arrival, naïve Bruno becomes aware of people in a nearby field, whom he refers to as farmers. As the movie progresses, Bruno begins to comprehend that his new home is anything but ordinary, and he begins to develop a yearning for adventure. Disobediently, Bruno sneaks through the garden and into the woods. As Bruno treks through the forest he discoveries a boy, Shmuel, dressed in what Bruno believes is a farmer’s outfit. Bruno quickly learns that Shmuel’s life is anything but ideal behind the wire fence, but Bruno still longs for his friendship. Throughout The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, the theme of boundaries and freedom becomes apparent by the use of sound, conflict, symbols, and lighting. For example, sound allows the audience to feel things they would have been unable to by just viewing the movie. Sound permits the viewers the ability to understand how certain events affected the characters. The conflicts also allow the audience to see the theme of the movie. Bruno being restricted to his front yard and Shmuel within the concentration camp allowed viewers to gather that their freedom is limited and they both have boundaries. Symbols, although hard to see at first glance, permitted the audience the underlying message. The property being enclosed by a massive fence hints at the fact not many people have freedom. Finally, the lighting within the movie drew the viewers to conclusions that were not completely obvious. All of these elements work together to provide the movie with the theme of freedom and
