Every person has different stressors in their lives and different ways of coping, therefore; what one person perceives as stress may not be stress for others. Self-esteem may influence how a person handles their life stress or what situations they find to be a stressor. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2015) defines self-esteem as “a confidence and satisfaction in oneself.” Sports and other physical activity, may play a role in an individual’s life in increasing one’s self-esteem while reducing one’s stress.

Athletes experience stressors that non-athletes do not. Lu, (2012) identified at least 40 items that cause stress in college athletes. Giacobbi, (2004) introduced a study on first-year college athletes and found that training intensity and performance expectations were their main stressors. College athletes have all the stressors of average students with the addition of their athletic expectations. In fact, the majority of athletes researched expressed that factors such as exams, writing papers, missing class because of games, and making up missed assignments was a source of stress for them (Humphrey, 2000).
