The novel The Stranger by Albert Camus was published in 1946, first was written in English hen was translated from the French by Matthew Ward. The film based off of the novel was released in 1967. The screenwriter and also director of the movie was Luchino Visconti. There were many small differences in the film compared to the novel. Most of the differences were to emphasize a specific part within the movie that the book necessarily didn't specify. One of the differences was how the movie began. Within the book, it started by Arthur Meursault receiving the news that his mother has passed away and he was on the bus heading to the funeral home. Arthur happened to run into an old friend Marie who he hadn't seen in years. In the novel they jumped into the water together and swam out into the raft that was stationed in the middle of the ocean. The novel says that he rested his head on her stomach and could hear her heartbeat beating softly. Within the movie they were swam out to the raft and laid down and he said he could feel her stomach rising and falling. This small difference made a big difference because if someone is reading the novel they might picture it completely different than what the movie portrays. The third difference is a when Arthur and his coworker Raymond wanted to go out to lunch together. The novel says that they waited for the bus at the bus stop, and the sun was beating down on them so harshly, they were tempted to skip lunch for the day. Within the film, it shows Arthur and Raymond running as fast as they could to hop onto the back of a pickup truck. This difference is very important because it changes the whole perspective of this certain part of the movie and also
