RH: What was it that got you interested in becoming an actress?
JS: When I was in the third or fourth grade--well, it was before that. I kind of always thought I wanted to be an actor, but I didn 't know what that really meant. I just liked watching movies and TV, and I wanted to do that. But I lived in Northern California, and nobody I knew was an actual actor. About a year and a half ago, I was with a friend who kept calling one of the shows "Orphan is the New Black." I wasn 't sure which show she was talking about, but I kept telling her it was either Orphan Black or Orange is the New Black. And she said, "No, no, it 's 'Orphan is the New Black. '" And I said, "That 's not a show, but that would be hilarious if all the clones were in prison together." Because you know how writers are, it took me about another six months to get it down on paper. I kept talking about it for awhile. Then it took about another four months for me to find my director.
