The Story of My Search As I began planning for the name research paper my English teacher gave me, I was not exactly sure what I would get out of it. The topic of the essay didn’t exactly speak to me because I already knew how I got my name and the meanings of it, so I did not know if I would learn something new. But as I began to research the meanings of my names, I realized that there is a lot more to a person’s name. In the first week of our research, we went to the library, and I used different books until I found the one that had the meanings of all three of my names. Over the course of the next week, I used the Internet and many different websites to find information that I did not know about my names. All that I knew about my name before researching was that my first name meant innocent, my middle name meant grace, and my last name meant thorn bush. I also knew that my grandmother had a dream about having a granddaughter named Katie, so my parents named me Katelyn. However, I wanted to learn a few things about my names through the research. I learned that doing research on multiple things requires organization and a need to prioritize tasks. The study on my names also helped me gain new modes of writing and helped me understand how to write them, making my writing have more variety. I learned means of organization throughout writing and how to interview someone for a specific topic. The way I thought about planning for essays improved because I now understand how to organize my research results, and I also understand how to take the results and put them into my essay correctly. It became known to me the thought that is put into someone’s name when their parents are choosing it. Writing this essay caused me to appreciate my name and what it means for me as a person, and how important names are to a person because it reflects on who they are and who they will

Shane Koyczan, the author of "To This Day", presents a narrative on names and the powerful impact these names or labels may introduce to a person's personal life depending upon the context. He describes the evolution of these negative labels throughout an individual's lifespan and the inner turmoil and challenges these labels bring about not just in the present, but in the future as well. We are his audience, every one of us, have been or could have been shaped and alienated through these labels, nicknames, or titles. Shane begins utilizing the features of "A Well-Told Story" right off the get-go with his own story. A story in which he describes, as an overweight child, how the name, pork chop, became his label early on; and the very deep impact it had on his childhood to the point where he, in fact, hates the food "pork chops" to this day.…

Being homeschooled, my mother was able to teach us history through field trips all over the east coast.…

However, in other areas of life surnames are just as important, if not more than when they were originally employed in society. For example, humans still utilize bynames as a way of differentiation between people who happen to possess similar first names, a use that surnames will serve for eternity. Furthermore, the reputation behind any person’s surname can and will follow them through life, even if that reputation has nothing to do with them (i.e. having the same last name as a celebrity or an infamous criminal). At the end of the day, a straightforward answer to these questions cannot be…
