Daniel Quinn tackles multiple issues with today’s society in his novel Ishmael. Through the viewpoint of a gorilla, Ishmael, who is someone that is not part of the modern human culture, Quinn attacks culture as the source of today’s problems, whether it is conflicting views on moral issues or the problem of global warming. Quinn grapples the issue of the creation myth, from which most problems plaguing Earth today stem and the concept of prophet, which promotes the same notions as the creation myth. In addressing these two issues, ultimately, Quinn concludes that people are in need of a new narrative to play out and that this can be a positive narrative that can help save the world.…

Roman and Greek mythology consist of multiple interpretations of how the creator, be it the gods or nature, contributed to the birth of the world. These stories draw the backgrounds of the gods and goddesses that govern much of classical mythology. Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Hesiod’s Theogony are two pieces of work that account for how our universe came to be. A comparison of Theogony with Metamorphoses reveals that Hesiod’s creation story portrays the deities as having an omnipresent, powerful function who are at the center of the universe’s creation whereas, in Metamorphoses, the gods do not play a significant role; rather the humans are at the center of the creation.…

Relationship Between God and Man Within Myths Gods have expectations that man struggles to understand. The Epic of Gilgamesh, Popol Vuh, and Genesis, like many creation stories, show similar themes that create a common lesson for the reader to learn from. There are rules, laws and commandments that the gods use to instruct man on how to live. When these commandments are broken, the gods impose punishments that show their authority over man. The punishment is not only given to the immediate offender, but to all of mankind.…

In today’s world, fate is considered to be a human-made construct that describes the succession of events in life that cannot be controlled; it is the opposite of free will. However, to the ancient Greeks, fate could absolutely be controlled. The humans often clashed with the Greek gods when trying to secure their destiny; humans believed they had free will, but the gods knew they had complete control over the people. This confrontation between humans and gods is seen throughout The Odyssey. The gods frequently alter situations the humans are in to change their outcomes while the people try to deal with their new situations and take back the control over their own lives.…
