His father wanted him to become a preacher, and while he avoided following what his father wanted, his story shows that he did become an inspiration through his writing and his beliefs through which he helped others to find ways for social change. According to David Leeming the church and the struggles of the Bible were important to Baldwin. Leeming biographer for James Baldwi found that much of what Baldwin did was highly influenced by his experiences in the church. In many ways, even though he did not go into the church, he did become a spokesperson for believers who wanted to see social change, and therefore his life was similar to spiritual leader. Baldwin tell the story of going into a restaurant where black people were not served. He talks about being told by a waitress that he could not be served in that restaurant, and as a result he threw a glass of water at a mirror which shattered and changed his view forever. However, it did not make him want to try and change many things in the U.S. At that point when he to the glass of water, he realized it was the first time he ever wanted to harm someone. For example, he wrote “Giovanni Room” about a white, gay couple in Paris and because homosexuality was not accepted easily at the publisher Knopf it was rejected. Even though his primary editor indicated he would have accepted it, unfortunately, he was on vacation and other rejected it and had moved on to other publishers. The point is that not everything that he wrote was from a black perspective nor was it specific only to the black experience.
