As a student born and raised in the south, segregation and the civil rights movement were subjects often studied. However, this tends to be rather impersonal. When Mrs. Esther Vaughn came to speak at Rome High School, in Rome, Georgia, the civil rights movement became tangible. Her personal story transformed a period of time that seemed light years away into something that could be viewed through her eyes. Two points in her speech about her youth stuck out to me: her lack of interaction with white people and the lack of significant violence in Rome yet the underlaid cruelty.…

Elizabeth Frances was born in a two-story white clapboard house in the modest town of McLouth, Kansas, to Clara Belle and Allen Elzaver in 1914. Their house has stood, mostly unchanged for the last hundred years on a street that bears the name of a family member. In fact, most of the older streets in McLouth bear the names of their family members. Clara Belle carefully chose the name Elizabeth Frances for her newborn, but when her doctor finally sat down a few days later to fill out the birth certificate, he inadvertently wrote Frances Elizabeth, much to the dismay of the family. It may not have seemed a monumental error, but since Clara Belle died of cancer when Elizabeth was seven years old, it was vital to Elizabeth to have the name her mother intended for her.…

Esther’s psychological crisis in The Bell Jar is likely a matter of stressful events triggering an episode of a disorder she’d always had. It seems likely that Esther suffered from schizotypal personality disorder (STPD), based on the symptoms she displayed. STPD is a mental illness that involves symptoms of anxiety, depression, and warped perception of reality. Esther was unable to read or write because letters “associated themselves in fantastic, untranslatable shapes, like Arabic or Chinese” (65).…

The Lord was in control of circumstances of Haman and thus could swiftly reverse his situation for being the enemy of His people. The book of Esther may seem to be absent of God as it includes no direct mention of His name. However, the circumstances of the characters evidently displayed an active Providence who utilized them to fulfill His divine will.…

Nebuchadnezzar is furious and throws them into a fiery furnace. They don’t burn and are not harmed. King alludes to this event to show that sometimes people can disobey, be punished, and still be unaffected.…

As author George Saunders said in “Thank You, Esther Forbes” on page 62, “By honing the sentences you used to describe the world, you changed the inflection of your mind, which changed your perceptions.” In this simple, yet elegant sentence I would elaborate its meaning as, The more vocabulary you have at your disposal the more vividly you can describe the world around you. Let me give you an example; If you and a 5th grader see an apple on a chair, the one with the more broad vocabulary would be able to describe said apple better, but the argument author Saunders makes is should you? Should you describe the apple sitting in the chair with crippling detail or should you just say simply, yet elegantly “The red apple sat upon the birch wood chair.”…

In the memoir, The Polygamist’s Daughter, the author Anna LeBaron describes the horrifying events of her past. The book seems to be a kind of coping device for LeBaron as often she inserts her current thoughts on the many situations she talks about. This essay will prove that Anna Lebaron looks back at her past with bitterness as she recalls, realizing she wasn’t really blessed, older men approaching her, the harsh circumstances in Denver, running away from the cult, and, when she finally started seeing the light, when she goes into counseling. People always told Anna and her siblings that they were blessed because they were Ervil’s children, yet Anna’s opinion begins to differ when her father uses her for slave labor.…
