A symbol is an object, person, place or experience that stands for something else, especially a material objects that represent something abstract. Symbols were used as communication devices in early Native American tribes. They are also used for things like super heroes. A child can quickly identify their idol and hero with that certain symbol. Irony is something that is portrayed but is opposite of what it really means. For example, irony can be found in a McDonald’s worker giving a speech about child obesity. It wouldn’t make sense because McDonald’s has been proven to give young children obesity. Mallard was a symbol of beauty in the story. “Mrs. Mallard is described as being young and having “ a fair, cam face” symbolizing the beauty…”(123helpme) She was represented as beautiful because of the thoughts she was having. Pus the scenery she was looking at while she was having her realizations were beautiful as well. So that was also one of the reasons why she was described as beautiful. Also the moments before her last hour were beautiful as well because she realized that she was going to have answer to but herself. Then to some people, death is a beautiful thing to happen in human nature. In this case Louise Mallard had a beautiful death because what the way she died, with no pain. Just the disappointment of her Husband’s physical return would kill her.Louise Mallard was described to have the “… innocence of a child”(123helpme). She had this characteristic because she was able to go on and look at the bright side of her Husband’s death. In this case the bright side to her was that she was free from her Husband’s imprisonment as a Victorian wife. Like a child, she was happy to have no control over life, she could now live her life the way she pleased. And the way she was afraid of her realizations, she was afraid of the disappointment that would come to her if someone were to find out about her unusual happiness of her Husband’s death, like a child would be like if the child did something wrong and he didn’t want their parents to …show more content…
An example of situational irony in the story is that Mrs. Mallard is “alive” “Brently Mallard is dead and Mrs. Mallard has fully become alive”.(enotes) After Mr. Mallard’s death, Louise finally the idea of her becoming free and living without the control of her husband makes her become alive. Just the thought of her not having to live with her husband anymore brings the life out of her. Because now she is happy to take on the new life that is coming her way. In the story, it describes her as being hopeless and longing for her death. But now that she feels alive she can life fully the way she wanted to. Another example of situational irony is that Mrs. Mallard is the one that ends up dying and Mr. Mallard is the one that ends being alive “But of course the doctors totally misunderstood the joy that kills her. It is not seeing her husband alive, but her realization that great joy she experienced during that last hour is over”(Hawaii.edu) The heart break that Mrs. Mallard wasn’t the happiness of seeing her husband but the pure disappointment that Louise felt once she saw her husband walk through the door. The glorious hour she had alone in her thoughts of her new life as a widow was over. First is dramatic irony, which is where the reader or audience knows something about the character that the character themselves doesn’t know. For this he used an example of Oedipus a character in Greek mythology. The story involves a young boy who is kicked out of his home when his father learns that he is to be killed by Oedipus. After growing up, Oedipus does end up killing his own father, due to the precautions that his father took in order to avoid that exact scenario: Irony. He also discusses situational irony, where the situation turns out different than expected.…

In line 20-24 Chopin states “she could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring of life.. The delicious breath of rain was in the air.” This choice of imagery makes me feel less sympathetic towards Mrs.Mallard due to the reason that she is happy that her husband passed away. Chopin’s diction and imagery contribute to her characterization of a transformed Mallard are shown in line 12. She states, “She wept at once.”…

First, an example of verbal irony is in the Party’s own slogan, “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength” (Orwell 2). This slogan shows how contradictory the Party itself is. An example of dramatic irony is the constant war going on between the three countries: Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia. The quote “It is a warfare of limited aims between combatants who are unable to destroy one another, have no material cause for fighting, and are not divided by any genuine ideological difference,” shows that the only reason the countries are fighting is to keep the ruling party, Big Brother, in power; hence the slogan: “War is Peace” (189). Finally, an example of situational irony is Julia’s intimate affairs when she goes on her Junior Anti-Sex League trips.…

Irony is used in the stories “Sorry, Right Number” by Stephen King and “Back There” by Rod Serling. Verbal irony uses sarcasm to hide how the character actually feels, while situational irony is what is the opposite of what is expected from that situation. Irony is needed in both of these stories because it builds suspense, makes the desire of the reader to keep reading, and making the overall story more enjoyable. In King’s “Sorry, Right Number”, he uses verbal irony through the stage directions in Act 1 where Connie asks Dennis “Do you think Aunt Dawn’s…

The first irony emerges when the alleged death of Mr. Mallard turns out to be the cause of Mrs. Mallard’s happiness, especially when she thinks about her freedom. The second irony emerges when media fails to report factual information. It is ironical for doctors to pronounce that Mrs. Mallard died of heart disease owing to the joy that kills. The final irony is that Mrs. Mallard freedom was never to be achieved since she died instead of her husband. In conclusion, it is evident that setting, characterization and irony contributed significantly to the theme of The Story of an…

One portion of symbolism, in this story, is the heart trouble Mrs. Mallard was diagnosed with. In this text, a heart trouble is symbolic physically and emotionally, as it correlates to her marriage. It represented her dependence and misery. Mrs. Mallard had no sense of freedom when her husband was alive, and on top of that she had a weak heart. When Mrs. Mallard realizes she has the authority to independence, her “heart races” so quickly that she passed away of an overwhelming delight.…

Chopin’s next description of Mrs. Mallard states, “She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength.” This quote quite directly points the reader to “repression” in Mrs. Mallard through the lines on her face. Firstly, she creates a climatic twist when Mrs. Mallard’s husband returns home. It shatters Mrs. Mallard’s vision of her new life, and results in a tragic ending; “When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease – of joy that kills.” (289). It is essential that she is portrayed that way because it allows the reader to visualize the irony in this situation; she didn’t die of joy that the doctor’s had presumed, but rather the loss of joy was too much for her to carry. As well, when Mrs. Mallard is in her room pondering about her long life ahead of her as she “opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.…
