In the short stories, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” by Ambrose Bierce both characters try to reach for there freedom in society. When having freedom, you have the power or the right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint (dictionary.com). As they reach for freedom it is taken away because of the actions they committed.

His wrist and arms are tired up, and is he strapped on to a beam so he has no physical movement of his body. He is walked over to a plank and he stands at the edge of it. There was a sergeant and a captain from the Northern army surrounding him watching and waiting for his time. The sergeant gives a signal to the captain and goes to the end of the board to support Farquhar. The sergeant is waiting for the captain to give the okay to step away and watch Farquhar dangle from the bridge. Farquhar closes his eyes and shuts out all the distractions around him and immediately starts to think about times with his wife and children. Farquhar starts to hear the ticking of his watch close and far away. Farquhar opens his eyes and he is headed straight into the water and he imagines himself coming lose from the ropes. He starts swimming to freedom to his worm and safe home. He begins to picture him and his wife sitting together when a soldier asks for a drink of water. Farquhar asks the soldier about the repairs that was being done on the railroads if they have reached the Owl Creek bridge. He was warned that of anyone was caught trying to interfere with the bridge they will be handed. Now, we go back to present time of the hanging and Farquhar loses his consciousness as he is let go to be hanged. He is awoken by a loud splash from him hitting the
