The setting of “The Storm” is significant in many ways. If the story had taken place in a more present day or in a different location then the events that unfolded would most likely not have occurred. The location is significant because the story takes place on a farm in the south, Louisiana. The farm allows the sinful acts to take place because it is secluded and there is no one around to prevent such acts from happening. If the story took place in a city there would be too many witnesses and talk would arise. Also, the time of the story has a huge impact on everything happenings. In the late 1800’s early 1900’s cars were not around and people had to use horses for transportation or walk, this depended on finical status. This downfall is what holds back Bobinôt and Bibi from returning home on time to Calixta. Also, there were no phones at the time and letters where the only form of communication which is not helpful for Bobinôt at the moment of the storm. The time of the story helps to also explain why Calixta and Alcée never had sex in their relationship; in the late 1800’s early 1900’s it was not okay to have sex prior to marriage compared to current times where it is more widely accepted. Not only is the setting important to the story but also, the actual storm. The storm directly relates to what it going on, tension rising then adultery, the storm passes and everything is good. Both the storm and the setting play very significant roles in this story and without them the story would never have unfolded in such events as it
