Calixa In Kate Copin's The Storm, By Kate Chopin

In the short story “The Storm” by Kate Chopin the reader comes into a small nineteenth century home. This home becomes the center of controversy as a husband and son leave a wife to go to the store, but are delayed getting back because of a large storm. In the time between the beginning and the end of the storm we see a character named Calixta put herself into positions no spouse should be in. Even though “The Storm” has a short timeline we learn many things about the main character Calixta and who she is. First, Calixta is the typical young married woman of her time. Calixta is a good housewife by maintaining her and Bobinôts’ home. For instance, every day Calixta does the laundry, sews, and cooks for her family. One day while Calixta is sewing, she notices a storm is coming and hurries outside to retrieve the laundry she hung out earlier, but does not appear to be worried about her husband and son. Soon after she does this her ex lover Alcee rides in on horseback and ask to stay until the storm passes. Calixta allows him to stay, but begins to worry whether her husband and son are on the way back or not. After being alone for a short amount of time Calixta begins to prove her disloyalty by allowing Alcee to do as he pleases by taking her in his arms and to run his hand through her hair. Both Alcee and Calixta engage in an affair which is the ultimate sign of disloyalty towards her husband Bobinôt. After Alcee is gone Calixta is preparing supper as her husband and son walk in and she greets them with open arms as if nothing ever happened. By acting like nothing happened and kissing her son and husband with the same lips, she just kissed her ex lover we see Calixtas’ true colors. Calista is able to smile in her husbands face and kiss him when only a few short hours ago she was with another man. The reason that she should not be forgiven is simple, she cheated. Once Calixta had an affair with Alcee the bond between her and her husband was broken. The vow to stay faithful that Calixta took with Bobinôt is irrelevant because she chose to break it. Also, her behavior is not understandable in anyway. When Alcee comes to her home before the storm, she was not wrong in allowing him to stay, but was wrong by allowing what happened to happen between the two. Also Calixtas’ behavior is unforgivable because she is supposed to be married to the man she loves, but shows that her love is not true by having the affair with Aclee. She then shows no sign of regret or remorse after cheating on her husband, but embraces him and is excited to see him upon his
