The Stolen Party Essay

When does someone lose their innocence? All of us have experiences that moves us away from a state of childhood innocence toward one of adult experience. In the short story, “the Stolen Party”, by Liliana Heker, her innocence vanishes out of her young brain when a lady named “Senora Ines” hands her, something not to be expected, money for the help throughout the party. Due to that moment, she quickly understands that her mother is right when says “that one’s not your friend”, meaning those higher-class people are not her friends. In the end of the story, Rosaura doesn’t understand that she is not one of Luciana’s friends, she shouldn’t go to Luciana’s birthday party, and also, she is “just” the maid’s daughter. Not until the end of the story, Rosaura realize that she is not one of Luciana’s friends. At the end of the night and of the story Senora Ines is the person who steals Rosaura’s innocence when she takes out two bills and hands them to her. Senora Ines states, “You really and truly earned this,… Thank you for all your help, my pet.”(217) Rosaura instantly feels devastation. Rosaura mentions to her mother that she wants to go to her friend Luciana’s birthday party but her mom denies her from going due to different society class. The mom states, “ I don’t like you going,… it’s a rich people’s party.”(213) Readers can sense clues in the beginning of the story when the mother responds to Rosaura, “Ah yes, your friend,…That’s not your friend. You know what you are to them? The maid’s daughter, that’s what.”(213) It senses readers that the mom might be right. The mother knew that her daughter did not fit in the party but yet she still went because the mother was the maid
