Oh yeah, if a person is white, they enjoy “keeping it in the family”. Don 't act confused. All Caucasians like to marry their own cousins and have kids. Why are people so surprised? To be clear, a stereotype is an oversimplified usually pejorative, attitudes that a person has towards another one 's outside their particular group. There are multifaceted views on a stereotype. Although there are many more, racial, gender, and ethnic stereotypes are the most popular. An ethnic stereotype are beliefs about classic characteristics of people of a certain ethnic group. A popular ethnic stereotype is that all Muslims are terrorists or a threat to the United States. Another common type of stereotype is, of course, racial. A racial stereotype is a generalization about someone based on their race or an automatic assumption made about all members of a certain race group. For example, all black people are ghetto or all white people are racist. The third familiar stereotype that are used in everyday life as well as television are gender stereotype. Now, the reason that stereotypes are used on a daily basis is still unknown. However, studies show that the less contact you have with that certain group, the more likely you will put a stereotype on them. Mad Men is a show that takes place in the 1960s. It promotes cigarette smoking, drinking, sexism, homophobia, feminism, adultery, and last but not least, racism. The interesting part about it, that’s not even the stereotypical part about the show. While watching this show, it becomes quite evident that all black men are servants. This aids the stereotype “black men can’t get proper jobs”. It is a known fact that this is an assumption, for that there are many successful black men. Another example is the show Married to Medicine. It is argued that it exploits educated and professional black women. The show associated materialism and unprofessionalism. There was a petition made by a group of women from Howard University to cancel the show from airing. Now there are more programs that portray benighted stereotypes. Just like there are stereotypes in popular sitcoms, there are some reality television shows that create assumptions. In other words, how they act on camera is most likely creating some of the stereotypes that are mentioned. On these type of shows, the people will act a complete fool just because they are on camera. While they are doing this, they don’t realize that they are not only making them look bad but the whole group as whole. For example, Jersey Shore was a show that presented on MTV. Every person in the house would be from New Jersey. Because they would get heavily intoxicated
