I feel like Common Core gets a bad rep, but honestly, the problem with Common Core is how it is implemented. I do feel like many teachers did not get the proper training and were expected to change their teaching styles. However, the standards are needed to prepare students for college and the real world. I also feel like they encourage teachers to be creative and implement new lesson such as, cooperative and inquiry that are more student-centric and allows students to explore and use critical thinking skills.
What Schools Do to Support or Discourage Student Success Prior to the debate, I had very little knowledge on what schools do to support student success. I’ve heard of programs like RTI, STEM, AVID, tutoring, after school programs, etc. Furthermore, in my opinion, one of the main goals schools and teachers have is to aid all students for success. However, I think there is always room for improvement and schools, teachers, and parents have to work together for every student well being and academic achievements. Now, when talking about what schools do to discourage student success, I can only think of a lack of support and resources available to students and teachers. If schools offer student programs, but are not implemented correctly, it’s not going to be effective. In my opinion, cell phones can be useful in high school classes, but they shouldn’t be the main source where students get their content. I’ve been in college classes where professors use cell phones for class activities and it works perfectly fine. It’s innovative and people seem to respond well because they get to use their phones. One of the downfalls, in using cell phones in classrooms was brought up in the debate, in how they’re a distraction. Students are easily tempted to use their cellphones to go on social media, and text message their friends. In conclusion, I wouldn’t use cellphones everyday, but I would use them for some classroom
