Differences Between Men And Women At North Carolina State University

Since coming to college, I have noticed that not all majors have an equal representation of both men and women. North Carolina State University is well known for diversity on campus and their attempts to raise awareness but I often feel that gender is often overlooked when diversity is discussed. Engineering has been and still is a male dominated field of study. Women have often been overlooked and seen as incapable of this type of work but in reality this is not true. Since NC State has a very large engineering program, I have had the opportunity to experience this on campus. She revealed to me that she has always had a desire to either go into architecture or engineering and she chose civil engineering because she with a degree in engineering she would be able to do the job of an architect and an engineer but if she would have earned a degree in architecture she would be limited. She has a passion for helping people and that is something that she told me that she feels that she can achieve as a civil engineer. Amelia explained to me that she liked the challenge that the field entailed and the fact that the outcomes of her work would impact so many people. Transportation and roads are something that everyone uses everyday and we rely heavily that roads will be safe and reliable. Amelia is one of the many women are are working to prove that stereotype wrong and to grow the field to have more females involved. The problem though, is that women are often intimidated and feel that they are not fit for the field simply because of the many stereotypes that are in place. The glass ceiling is another reasoning behind this limit to what society believes women’s role is. In a male-dominated society, it is important that we continue to raise awareness and educate the people. We must step up and make change for the better and ensure that both men and women are given equal opportunities in all aspects of life. While some stereotypes may be true, we must work to prove that not everyone falls under every stereotype and improve the minds of all
