The state government can in force many things. The state government can also support or cause something to change for the better. Five activities that the state government perform for healthcare are: quality improvement, data management, public health law, human resource management, and policy development. Quality improvement of care requires active involvement from providers, patients, policy makers, and the public. Providers need to know from patients and the public what they need to improve on. Policy makers create policies to help push and generate improvement by the provider. “States can play a strategic role in designing, implementing, and assessing healthcare quality improvement. The state government can provide leadership, work in partnership, and implement the improvements needed” (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2014). The state government has the ability to lead providers in developing a quality improvement process. They can give a statewide push behind small efforts that might otherwise die for lack of energy. “Some parts of the state government stand to benefit from quality improvement in terms of improved services and lower cost. These include Medicaid agencies and mental health and substance abuse agencies that also control payment to providers” (AHRQ, 2014).
