The Standard American Diet (SAD) is full of refined grains, sugar, processed food, and fast food. All of these have high calorie content and little nutritious value. People should provide access to nutritious healthy food not only for themselves, but also for their children because childhood lifestyle behaviors usually become adult lifestyle behaviors (). Some ways the SAD can be combated include decreasing processed foods, buying organic food, eating more leafy greens and vegetables, and cutting down sugar intake. Eating organic food reduces toxic load from pesticides and other chemicals. The “Total Diet”, from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, focuses on the overall pattern of eating, moderation, proportion, and variety of foods ().
